Handbags, wallets, cellphones, and clothing were among the debris discovered floating near the crash site of Lion Air flight JT 610 on Monday.

Boats, a helicopter and scores of rescuers, including teams from three nearby cities, were working some 34 nautical miles northeast of the coast near Jakarta to find any wreckage in the Java Sea.

Authorities said they are still trying to locate the main fuselage. Search teams are working on the assumption that the plane has sunk and were using equipment to try to detect an underwater locator beacon.
