Trump and Kim held a summit last June in Singapore. It marked the first time the sitting leaders of the two countries had met face-to-face.

The two sides signed a joint declaration where North Korea and the U.S. agreed to work toward the “complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula” in exchange for unspecified security guarantees.

Trump declared in the aftermath of the meeting that North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat, and has cited the absence of test missiles as evidence of his claim. Critics have noted that Kim has not taken concrete steps to abandon his nuclear arsenal since the talks.

In a New Year's Day address, Kim warned that North Korea would have to seek a "new path" if the U.S. moves forward with sanctions over Pyongyang's weapons program.
