This year’s theme is Tiki Holiday.
In all, about 90 boats made the circuit through the harbor, led by Dana Wharf Whale Watching’s Dana Pride.
The boats sailed past Dana Wharf down to Waterman’s Restaurant and then reversed course, heading back past Dana Wharf and into the harbor’s inner channel and to the harbor bridge. They turned around again, and continued past Wind & Sea Restaurant and the Harbor Patrol dock toward the harbor’s outer channel and then on to the Ocean Institute and into East Basin.
This is the first boat parade put on by the harbor’s new landlord, Dana Point Harbor Partners, which is undertaking a $330 million harbor renovation.
“We understand the importance of the holiday tradition of the Festival of Lights and Boat Parade, and wanted to make our first year special,” said Bryon Ward, president of Burnham-Ward Properties and part of Dana Point Harbor Partners.
Ward said the partners decided on the tiki theme because of the harbor’s laid-back vibe.
“It’s a theme that takes us back to Dana Point’s rich surfing and waterman roots, and ties into Hawaiian and Polynesian culture,” he said. Dana Point Harbor is a “come as you are” kind of place that exudes the Aloha spirit and this year’s tiki theme is a perfect fit.”
Boaters can win $10,000 in cash prizes for their decorations. An event will be held in January to present the prizes, said Kelly Rinderknecht, general manager of Marina at Dana Point.
On Saturday, holiday activities will begin at the harbor at 4:30 p.m., with the parade launching at 7:30.
